Is Oil in Skincare the Enemy?
Obsessed with softness and instant shine? Oils in skincare are often packed with vital skin-loving nutrients, fatty acids, and antioxidants and they come in all sorts for all skin types. As skin produces it's own natural oil, if we strip the skin of it's natural oils it will only encourage the sebaceous glands to produce more oil to compensate. The skin needs some oil, if not it can become dry, tight and extremely sensitive.
Natural plant oils have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial benefits that can allow your skin to breathe. Mastic and jojoba are our top pics and are closer to the natural sebum produced in skin. These oils are less likely to overload and trigger skin breakouts and help regulate the skin.
Although coconut, argon, wheatgerm and avocado, as well as mineral oils are great, they are also heavy. These are petrochemicals that feel lovely but leave a film on the surface of the skin and will only block pores. The natural the better, steer clear of harsh chemicals, sulphates and anything synthetically fragranced, as it can be an irritant. We ensure that there are no petrochemicals, harsh chemicals, and no synthetic ingredients in our products. Our oil is gloriously lightweight and the skin-identical nature of our Moonlight Recovery Elixir oil makes them extremely effective and appropriate for all skin types.
Your skin is made up of both oil and moisture and it needs BOTH to function optimally. So whatever products you choose, and whichever order you go with, for the love of soft skin, do use both an oil and a moisturiser.
Skin that's oily and prone to acne is believed to be deficient in a certain fatty acid called 'linoleic acid'. When trying to combat acne prone, eczema, rosacea or psoriasis, oil-free just won't cut it. It might seem unreasonable to use face oil for acne when excess sebum that your skin produces causes breakouts by clogging pores. But face oil can actually help balance your skin’s oils production, kill acne-causing bacteria, and reduce inflammation for a clearer complexion.
Oils can be extremely effective when the formula is appropriate for your complexion type. If your skin is sensitive to breakouts then we suggest using a tiny amount and pat it all over your face after you cleanse in the evening. Also, remember to only start using it twice a week so your skin is able to adapt to the changes and then slowly build to every second day and so on. Face oil for dry skin can help form a protective layer around the cells that locks in hydration for the skin longer.
How to use face oil? After cleansing, toning, and exfoliating the first, your skin will be ready to fully absorb the benefits of your oil. You can mix a few drops of oil with your daily moisturiser, morning and night. Or you can pat and press a few drops directly onto the skin after (or instead of) serum. Let it fully absorb before finishing with a layer of moisturiser. In the morning, to get a dewy look, try layering a couple drops of treatment oil over your sunscreen before applying foundation. At night, stick with a moisturising oil and let is really soak in while you sleep.
